This is the Vampire Maid, made by Bastet, which was recently listed on e-bay!

The World of toy collecting runs deep, horror toys and dolls are becoming BIG business, with various mass produced and OOAK horror toys becoming more and more prominent in stores and online...its pretty obvious that the market for horrorsome things just keeps growing as time passes.

Beth Robinson and Strange Dolls

Dark Obsessions is currently in the midst of conducting an interview with the hugely talented creator of Strange Dolls, Beth Robinson, so keep your eyes peeled both here and on the forum.

In the past month, one of our excellent, and "on the ball" administrators on Dark Obsessions had the chance to conduct an interview with the mind behind Toxic Toons, Voodooz and the infamous Zombie Hamster, John Pinkerton, take a look.

D~O: First I would like to thank you for taking the time to talk with us.

John: No problem Thank you for giving me the oportunity.

D~O: A lot of people are excited about Voodooz, how did you meet up with Mezco to do this line?

John: Im so glad there is some excitment growing about them... Wait till you guys see the final product! I have been working with Mezco for a few years now on some different toy lines when Mez spotted my Stitch doll. He asked if I would be interested in doing an entire series based on him. Well... to make a long story short I said yes! Mez and I brain stormed allot ( we both did tons of research) and filled in the rest of the line with some very cool charecters!

D~O: I love those Zombie Hamsters, any chance those will hit the stores?

John: Ahhh yes... those guys were a total surprise to me! Who would think that a Zombie Hamster would go over so well! To answer your question about them making it into stores... I hope so! There has been some interest and they actually have a whole story behind them. I was even tossing around the idea of making a childrens book based on them.

D~O: What are your influences that help you create your dolls and other creations?

John: No real infuences that I could put a finger on. I have so many ideas just dancing around in my twisted little brain... Sometimes they just jump out and beg to be made!

I have been into monsters and horror films all of my life... I mean I have baby pictures with a Dracula doll! How's that for being a monster fan! So Im guessing all of those things have influcenced me over the years.

D~O: What is the most popular item on your website?

John: Its a toss up between the Little Green Man model kit or Morella the bug eyed little girl.

D~O: Do you get any negative reactions from people about your products (saying they are gross or evil) or is it mostly positive?

John: No... actually I never have! Can you believe that? I am totally surprised that I havent. I guess my creations are just that cute!

D~O: Are there any products on the market that you really like?

John: Oh yea! Im a huge toy fan and love some of the stuff Im seeing! Mezcos new Hellboy and Goon products rock! I just picked up a 1 to 1 scale Tingler (from the Vincent Price movie) and I love it. This thing is just a huge bug like monster that will look great on my wall!

D~O: What is your favorite Horror movie?

John: I have two answers for you first up the classic movie that I have always loved... Frankenstein.

Next up I would say Halloween since this was one of the first modern horror films I managed to watch alone.

D~O: Are you doing any shows or conventions that you would like to promote?

John: Well ofcourse I will be doing some shows! lol! But really this coming spring... yes spring I will be at Cinema Wasteland in Cleveland Ohio and shortly after that I will be attending the Chiller Theatre show in New Jersey.

D~O: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us, any last words?

John: Again no problem it was my pleasure chatting with you.

I always have last words Keep doing what you guys are doing and support the horror and toy businesses. I love the site and would like to see it keep growing. Dont forget to keep checking my site... Im always making something new!

I want to again thank John for the chance to talk with him. Check out his website

Zombie Hamster

Stitch - Voodoo

Fans of horror toys and the like will always have a thirst for something fresh, something that bites them on the arm like a George Romero creation and makes them take notice. Bleeding Edge Goths are such an example. Capitalising on the rise in the media of nu-goth culture and its suprising popularity, with bands like Marilyn Manson, Murderdolls and Jack of Jill, BEGoths have become a popular line, taking ideas and obvious goth fashions, and turning them into cute little plastic beings, in a number of shapes, sizes and colors.

Some people may not have been so keen on BEGoths, with many people finding them "too obvious". That is where the beauty of OOAK horror dolls pokes it's head in the door. Twisted Tots and Handmade Krypt Kiddies are a perfect example of OOAK horror dolls, and how fucking good they can be. But it doesnt end with them. OOAK dolls like Bastet dolls grab attention and demand that you look, with the often disturbing yet artistic look that Bastet dolls show, it is difficult to look away. Like as a horror toy collector has seldom been so busy, with more and more ideas and concepts being produced.

Some fans like things more discrete, turning the corner of horror and finding "cuter" dolls, spewing with color, vibrancy and nostaligia. Pullip and Blythe dolls aren't a new idea or even really linked with horror. On occasion, one is customised in a goth or punk way, but the dolls are really just an escape from the evil for many fans, giving a little something extra. The dolls dont seem out of place when put on display with a Living Dead Doll though, it is almost as if horror and beauty go hand in hand...*wink wink* but we already knew that, right?

Keep your sadistic eyes on this space for updates on more horrorsome and demonic things!
