Recently, I had the honour and opportunity to conduct a special interview with the artist and mind behind Dark Creation, D.L.Marian. Exclusive to Dark Obsessions, here is what she had to say...

First of all, we're all have our inspirations when it comes to art, who or what inspired you start creating the dolls?

When I was a very young girl my father would drop me off at the movie theater every weekend to see horror movies starring Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price etc.. I have had a fascination with all things macabre since I was a child. I really never played with dolls as a kid …I thought they were silly. I loved boy toys. I think I always had an urge to , well, kill them. Sounds pretty bad doesn’t it? I always tell people I run a doll morgue.

When it comes to making the dolls, what is the overall reaction to your creations, and do you have any funny stories to share about hate mail, or obsessed fans?

Generally they put their hands over their eyes and make a negative comment. Then they peek through their fingers and tell me how sick I am as they walk away. Usually about ten minutes later they start visiting a particular doll and then they buy one. Of course they don’t understand why they are buying it, but it’s too late, they are hooked, I’ve touched their dark side. These buyers then proceed to do away with their pretty dolls and replace them with little dead things.

AH … Hate Mail … I do get my share of that. According to the senders, I am morally deprived and depraved, hate children, my doll’s cause people to turn into vile humans like mass murderers, pedophiles and rapist, I am not an artist just a psychologically ill sicko with no life…. And on and on. I love it. It is always a challenge to respond and make them see the errors of their ways. They generally don’t write back, ever.

If I have obsessed fans they haven’t contacted me. So I guess I don’t.

Are you a collector of dolls yourself?

No. I collect antique ouija boards and crystal balls.

To learn a little more about you, the mind behind these beautifully crafted dolls, let me ask you, if you could host a dinner party, with 6 guests, alive or dead, anyone at all, who would you invite, and why?

1- John Lennon would share his quirky wisdom and wit.

2- P.T. Barnum found beauty in every type of freak and had the genius to introduce it to the public in a non threatening way.

3- Steven King has the most complex haunting brain on earth today. I would like to experience it in person.

4- Edgar Allen Poe thought and wrote from a frightening place. His work leaves us all questioning our own world. I think he would really enjoy Steven King.

5- Imagine if Alfred Hitchcock could get his hands on today’s technology. Horror movies would never be the same. Plus, he could film the dinner party.

6- Finally, Jesus Christ would make a wonderful moderator and he could answer all of those questions man has had for 2000 years.

Music and movies are often a source of inspiration for artists, what movies and music do you like, and so they have any effect on the dolls?

My favorite movies are the old classic horror flicks, Stigmata, Audrey Rose, The Exorcist, The Omen and anything starring Bing Crosby or Danny Kaye.

I do like Gregorian Chants and Ragtime.

I am sure everything I experience in the course of a day effects my creativity.

Could you run us through the process of what it takes to make a Dark Creation doll?

Well Chris, there are several different type dolls I create.

Small porcelain dolls are fairly easy, mostly concept and paint. I usually create these to sell at an affordable price on ebay. When I first started creating, this was the only type doll I did.

Large porcelain or vinyl dolls are bit more difficult. I usually find a doll that speaks to me. I strip it down, base coat and paint it. I never use spray paint, only hand applied color and tint. Then I seal it and dress it.

The vinyl freak show type babies are my passion. They take days to prep for the final coloring and sealing. Many have spikes, staples, studs, extra heads …. Etc..

I have an endless catalog of ideas for these babies in my brain. When I close my eyes at night, I see what I’ll be doing the next day in detail. The stranger the better.

Do you have a favourite of the dolls you've made?

Every so often I create a doll that I want to keep. I love the Post Mort Em Babies. I just want to protect them.

What was the first doll you ever made, and did you think at that time it would become as big a part of your life as it is today?

I knew the minute I finished my first doll it would become my life. I was meant to do this.

The first doll I ever created was a porcelain gothic woman named Vonda (after my Great Aunt) and she was wonderful. I put her ebay for $9.99 and nobody wanted her so my daughter bought her. That was two years ago and she still has it in her collection. She said “Someday Mom your dolls will be valuable and I will have your very first one”. Time will tell.

I know you sell on E-Bay, its where I was lucky enough to purchase a doll from you, if anyone wants to know more about your dolls, how do they go about finding out more and ordering from you?

They can visit my web site
www.DarkCreation.com or look for me on ebay. I sell under the name “thekrypt”.

I offer Custom Dolls and Lay Away Plans on my web site. Just send me an email.

Thankyou so much for your time, and your support for Dark Obsessions. To finish, would you like to share a favourite quote, or thank anyone?

Thank you Chris, it has been fun. I would also like to thank MzBlackWidow for inviting me to join Dark Obsessions.

Dark but the sun is shining … Eyes gray and hollow blind won’t see

So far gone, still alone … Pull me back to sanity
